私のもっぱらの仕事は、日本社会の「新しいことは原則禁止」という慣習と、グーグルの「そんなもん原則許可でしょ」という当然の思いとの間に、折り合いをつけることでした。分かりやすく言えば、あちこちに対して「ご迷惑をおかけして申し訳ありません」と頭を下げる役を務めただけなのです。日本社会の不思議は、それなりの年格好の米国本社副社長兼日本法人代表取締役社長が、わざわざ出向いてきて頭を下げたということで、なんとなく収まるところです。折り合いをつけるための改善は行っても、本質的な点で、「そんなもん原則許可でしょ」について、妥協した記憶は皆無です。
